Tim Tebow, a Patriot?

When all the sports world should be talking about the upcoming Game 3 of the NBA Finals, we find ourselves thrown back under the big top circus tent that is Tim Tebow. I’m still baffled at New England for signing Tim Tebow when it was almost a certainty that he had taken his last knee in the NFL. Sure over the years Bill Belichick has taken on media distractions such as Corey Dillon, Randy Moss and most recently Chad Johnson aka Ochodoing30daysinthebighouseCinco, but never has New England taken on such a project and distraction that attaches itself to Tim Tebow like a remora. “Broadway” Joe Namath sticks his nose in NY Jets qb business

Who asked you Joe?

Recently Joe Namath, the only quarterback to know what it is win a Super Bowl in New York (as a Jet) made it clear that he favors Mark Sanchez to win the quarterback “battle” in New York.

Appearing at a United Way charity function Tuesday night, Namath says ”there’s no doubt at all” about who is the better quarterback. He adds that ”Mark is going to get better.”

The Jets traded with Denver to bring in Tebow to back up — some think challenge — Sanchez for the first-string job. Namath, who led the franchise to its only NFL title in the 1969 Super Bowl, adds he is a fan of both quarterbacks and that Tebow can help the Jets.

Dwyane Wade and Tim Tebow at Yankees game

Enjoying some off time after beating the New York Knicks at MSG on Sunday afternoon, Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade took in a Yankees game in the Bronx. Tim Tebow also was in attendance and the two shared some time together.

One may look at them and think that they don’t have anything in common, but I think it’s totally opposite. Yes on the surface they are both athletes and are making nice money. But I believe they are both Christians. Wade’s mother has her own church in Chicago and we all know how Tebow feels about his religion.

It would have been great to be a fly on the cap of either of those guys to hear what the conversation was like. By the way, when they were shown on the big screen, the crowd boo’d and cheered the same. Who do you think they were booing and cheering for?

Tim Tebow speaks to massive church in Georgetown, Texas

A couple of things are curious here.

The fact that Tim Tebow reached out to this church to speak to their congregation is curious. I don’t think there’s a doubt that Tebow is gearing up for some post football career type move into the pulpit or something dealing with religion. This is good practice for him. But when this church got word that Tebow wanted to “share his story of faith”, attendance grew and more volunteers were added.

From the clip I also found it curious that he finally addresses the “Tebowing” thing that popped up in the season. He’s absolutely right, he wasn’t the first athlete to bend on a knee on the field and he certainly won’t be the last.

Tebow took to the pulpit about half way through the service, which featured live Christian music, speaking for about 20 minutes with Champion. “My biggest prayer is to kind of make that cool again,” Tebow said alluding to his patented “Tebowing,” or dropping to one knee in prayer – a move that’s become one of 2012′s biggest memes. “For a high school kid to get on a knee and pray and it’s not something that’s unique or different and that it’s O.K. to be outspoken about your faith.”

Did Tim Tebow kill Linsanity?

Well not physically, but maybe spiritually?

It’s funny that just a few days since Tim Tebow officially landed in New York and became a member of the New York Jets, that the city’s other main attraction has fizzled out like a sparkler on a champagne bottle.

Jeremy Lin (remember him?) will be out for the foreseeable future as is scheduled to have surgery on his meniscus on his left knee. This could be season ending for Lin, as the regular season only has four weeks left. The Knicks would have to secure a second round berth for Lin to see any Knicks playoff basketball. If the playoffs began today, the Knicks would face the Chicago Bulls. Good luck on that.

“This happening now hurts,” Lin said. “All the players, we really put our heart and soul into the team and into the season, and to not be there at the end when it really matters most is hard.”

Is there a higher being at work here? Could this knee injury  be a sign from a higher spiritual being, sent in to let Lin know that there is only room for one spiritually strong athlete in New York?

NY Jets have big plans for Tebow

There’s only one way to put it. The New York Jets want Tim Tebow to eventually be the starter in New York. There’s no getting around it or sugar coating it. That’s their plan. How else can you explain these events.

  • Earlier this month the Jets signed Drew Stanton, the former long time back up in Detroit, to be the backup in New York. It was discussed and agreed that’s what he would do. Stanton was in no way a challenge to Mark Sanchez
  • As soon as Tebow was available via the signing of Peyton Manning, the Jets go into trade talks for acquiring him
  • When the trade was close to becoming a reality,  Stanton was informed by Jets administration that he was going to be traded. They apologized and tried to make the transition as easy as possible

Now that Tebow is in the fold in New York, there is already talk about him supplanting Sanchez eventually. Never mind the extension that Sanchez signed right after the Jets were politely excused from the Manning sweepstakes. How do the Jets explain signing a former starting qb knowing all the attention he brings, as a back up?

Team owner Woody Johnson has refuted the claims that the Jets move for Tebow was more about staying in the press than it was about football. They had a press conference because the media demand was high. The day after the trade was announced one of Tebow’s endorsers Jockey had a billboard put up near the Lincoln tunnel. And yes the Jets name was on it.

The Jets were looking to make a splash during this off season and they did. Will it come at the expense of Mark Sanchez? Stay tuned.

Tim Tebow in Ghostbusters spoof (video)

This is what it’s all about folks. All Tebow, all the time.

And it’s not even football season! In the words of (current Jet, soon to be former Jet…maybe) Bart Scott “CAN’T WAIT!”
