FIU Football Coach Mario Cristobal rumored to replace Schiano at Rutgers

**update**6:46pm Cristobal to stay at FIU

Cristobal, who spent the past five years as head coach at Florida International, reportedly accepted the job when offered by Rutgers athletics director Tim Pernetti and only the details of the contract need to be settled.

But Cristobal, who was an assistant under Schiano at Rutgers for three years, decided to stay at the school he has led to bowl games the past two seasons

For the second time in about 3 months Mario Cristobal has been approached for a coaching vacancy and by the looks of it, the 2nd time is the charm

After interviewing for the then open job at U of Pittsburgh in December, Cristobal was just recently interviewed for the vacancy at Rutgers, which was left open by Greg Schiano who took the Tampa Bay Buccaneers coaching position.

Cristobal reportedly interviewed Sunday night, with Steve Addazio among the other reported candidates. He coached Rutgers’ offensive line and tight ends from 2001 to 2003 before taking the same position with the¬†Miami Hurricanes¬†through 2006. In 2007, he took over a FIU program in such sorry shape that he actively steered recruits away from the football facilities.

We will continue to update as we get a solid confirmation but signs are pointing to Cristobal taking the mon..er the job and running to New Jersey.
