Philadelphia Eagles and Riley Cooper trying to make amends

By Jeff Fox
Philadelphia Eagles receiver Riley Cooper has been sent threatening messages after a video of him making a racial slur became public. That is the latest development in this high profile drama that has shaken up the NFL.
The team announced this past weekend that Riley informed the club of the threats and did not know who made them. The team has notified the league’s security department.

Cooper was fined by the Eagles after his slur became known Wednesday. New Eagles Coach Chip Kelly has a real dilemma on his hands as he has a white player make such a negative remark in a locker room filled with primarily African-American players. Many in the Eagles locker room are quite reluctant to forgive Cooper who made his controversial comments at a Kenny Chesney concert. Cooper left the team last Friday to seek counseling.

“Riley Cooper made us aware of the tweets when the video became public,” the team said in a statement. “He told us that he did not know about the video. He informed us he blocked the tweets because he did not know the person nor understand the context of what that person was threatening.
“We promptly alerted NFL security. This information potentially speaks to a legal issue that is a matter between Riley and the authorities. Our focus has been on Riley’s words and actions.”

Cooper has apologized profusely since the video has surfaced. For some reason I feel sympathy for him, and I do not feel that he is a racist. Rather he made a huge mistake saying the worst thing he could think of to a black man during an intense argument. Most will not agree with that sentiment but it is my opinion.

Eagles coach Chip Kelly has said Cooper’s roster spot is not in jeopardy. Cooper has just 46 catches and five touchdowns in three years with the Eagles, but had been practicing with the starters after Jeremy Maclin’s season-ending knee injury. Maclin’s unfortunate injury makes Cooper even more of an asset to the team. Asked when Cooper will return to the Eagles, Kelly said there’s no time frame.

“When we do, we’ll make sure we announce it so it’s not going to be a surprise to anybody,” Kelly said.
Cooper’s departure coupled with Maclin’s injury leaves the Eagles lacking experienced receivers behind two-time Pro Bowl wideout DeSean Jackson and longtime slot receiver Jason Avant. It’s giving Ifeanyi Momah and Arrelious Benn a chance to not only make the team, but get some playing time.

Regardless of how all of this plays out for the Eagles, Riley Cooper will be fortunate to still be a member of this team come September. The young man has a lot to atone for and hopefully during his time away from the team he learns that words do hurt people. He did a terrible thing, he owned up to it. He had to since it was on video for the world to see. Bottom line is Cooper has a lot of making up to do.

Riley Cooper wants to fight all N-words

I don’t know whether Riley Cooper is soft ass or a dumb ass. First of all, what negroes are at a Kenny Chesney concert? And if so how many?

I really think Cooper, who attended the University of Florida, just got caught using the N-word the way that black youth today use it, as a noun. Really…how many blacks are at a Chesney concert that would garner his attention?

Cooper will more than likely face suspension for something that otherwise would not show up on the internet if this were 5-10 years ago.

He did apologize via twitter

Social media wins again.

**UPDATE**
Cooper has been fined by the Philadelphia Eagles for using the “n-word” and it being caught on video. Jeffrey Lurie added

“We are shocked and appalled by Riley Cooper’s words. This sort of behavior or attitude from anyone has no role in a civil society. He has accepted responsibility for his words and his actions. He has been fined for this incident.”

And the NFL said

“The NFL stands for diversity and inclusion. Comments like this are wrong, offensive, and unacceptable.”[

consider the matter closed.

DeSean Jackson guarantees Super Bowl win for Eagles

At this point, next year when the Philadelphia Eagles return for training camp, there should be a gag order in place. Don’t nobody guarantee wins! Don’t nobody say you’re a “dynasty”! Don’t say nothin!

For the past 3 years, the Eagles players are guilty of saying something dumb that usually is the opposite of what there seasonal outcome has been. Now we have this….as tweeted out by @EaglesInsider

Jackson guarantees the #Eagles will win a Super Bowl in the next five years w/him under contract.

Yes. That Desean Jackson. The one who just got injured on Monday night and is out for the year.

Well at least he has four years left to make good on that guarantee. We took a poll of some celebrities to ask them what they thought about Jackson’s statement…

Trent Richardson aka “Da Beast”

I liked Trent Richardson when he was behind Mark Ingram at Alabama. When he burst onto the scene, I knew he was going to be good if not better than Mark Ingram.

He started out his NFL career  in one hell of a way…

Can the Eagles win with a fragile Mike Vick?

Mike Vick got a nice shot to the ribs last night in his second pre season game against the New England Patriots. Although the hit knocked him out of the game, he didn’t sustain any major injuries, just soreness.

Since that hit, the conversation regarding his style of play has been reignited. Yes he’s an electrifying runner and is the consummate duel threat qb. But can the Philadelphia Eagles win, and by win I mean Super Bowl, with a qb who is some what fragile? After the game, DeSean Jackson was quoted as saying Vick said

“Man, I can’t keep taking hits like that.’”

What we have to remember is that on the specific play from Monday nights game, Vick was in the pocket and wasn’t scrambling. His offensive line is solid, but they need to do a better job of protecting their franchise. I will agree that when Vick is on the run, he needs to learn how to slide or get of out bounds.

The short answer to the win question is, if they or Vick stays healthy then there is no reason this team cannot win. But staying healthy is the key to success for the Eagles.

Jacory Harris signs with Philadelphia Eagles

Jacory Harris signs with the Eagles

When he got to the University of Miami 4 years ago, Jacory Harris arrived with a lot of potential spewing from his arms. Along with the other  blue chippers from Miami Northwestern, they were looked upon as the group to bring the swagger back to the U.

Fast forward four disappointing years which included 2 head coaches, several offensive coordinators and one scandal that was supposed to close football at the U, Jacory found himself undrafted and trying out at football camps in Miami (Dolphins) and Philadelphia.

Friday, the Philadelphia Eagles decided to give him a shot. The quarterback position is crowded in Philly, with Mike Vick, Mike Kafka, Trent Edwards and Nick Foles. There’s no guarantee that Jacory will make the team, but at least he’s got a punchers chance at cracking the squad, if not the practice one.

Mike Vick PSA for animal cruelty (video)

I don’t know how I feel about this. It almost seems as other famous people who’ve committed crimes (all types) that are worst than what Mike did got off a lot easier. They did their time and were forgotten about.  I don’t see any anti fraud PSA’s from Martha Stewart. Has anyone filmed Bernie Madoff yet?

Is it because Vick plays football? Is it because this country puts more value over an animals life than a human being (see Trayvon Martin case)? And yes I’ll ask..is it because he’s black?

I hope that this and other things Mike Vick have done to rebuild his image and his past dealings are enough for people to leave him alone and for him to continue with his life.
