Orlando Magic Cheerleader survives nasty fall

I didn’t know there were male NBA Cheerleaders. I thought all most teams had were dance squads, and the sometimes corny and crazy halftime entertainment.

You learn something everyday.

Well the cheerleader that fell during this stunt during the Magic-Knicks game tonight is fine and recovering in an area hospital.

The fall

Here’s her being wheeled off the court and waving to the crowd

Shaq will not pursue Orlando Magic GM job

Whew! We may have just averted the most embarrassing career move of a lifetime.

The internet went nuts Wednesday with speculation that Shaquille O’Neal would go after the general manager job left open in Orlando after  the firing of Otis Smith. Dr. Diesel is currently an NBA analyst (sort of) on TNT’s NBA show with Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith and Ernie Johnson. Shaq released a statement basically shooting down the offer.

“When I first heard about the vacancy for the Orlando Magic general manager position, I was clearly intrigued,” O’Neal began in the statement. “I was drafted by the Magic, I have a great love for the franchise and I have made the city of Orlando my home. Additionally, I have great admiration and respect for the DeVos (ownership) family.

“However, this is not a job I have an interest in pursuing. I feel very fortunate to be with TNT and to have the best job in sports. I look forward to many more years with Charles (Barkley), Kenny (Smith) and E.J. (Ernie Johnson). I wish the best for the Magic and I am confident that they will select a great GM and coach.”

Stephen A. Smith said it best the other day. Shaq is getting paid a lot of money to basically work 2-4 nights a week. Is he ready to get into the daily grind of being a GM and building a team? Shaq needs to be an owner, not a GM.

Shaq is about the business, but I think he’s about the fun more than the business.

Orlando Magic fire Stan Van Gundy and release Otis Smith

In a move totally done to keep Dwight Howard in a Magic uniform for at least another 5 yrs or so, Orlando Magic CEO Alex Martin announced today that the team has relieved Stan Van Gundy of his coaching duties, and GM Otis Smith has mutually agreed to leave as well.

“On behalf of the DeVos Family, we sincerely appreciate and thank Otis and Stan for all that they have done on and off the floor for the Orlando Magic,” Martins said. “They both brought die-hard dedication and an unmatched work ethics on a daily basis”.

Much will be speculated and talked about in the next few days regarding this move that everyone knew was eventually coming. One could only think that this could come back to bite the Magic in the butt if Dwight doesn’t resign there next summer.

Stay tuned…

Big Baby better be careful. He may snap something.

Of course we’ve seen Davis show off his dance steps before…

Magic suspend Chris Duhon for one game

Here I thought that all Duke basketball alumni were some good two shoes type of guys, and along comes Chris Duhon getting written up and sent away for a day!

The Orlando Sentinel reported that Duhon will not be with the Magic tonight against the Detroit Pistons.

Backup point guard Chris Duhon has been suspended for one game for conduct detrimental to the team, a Magic spokesman said.

The Magic are already without Dwight Howard and Hedo Turkoglu. No word yet on if Stan Van Gundy will find something else to do by the time they tip off at 7pm.

Van Gundy and Howard going back and forth

Just when things seemed to be settling down in Mickey’s land it seems that things are getting uglier by the minute.

The Orlando Magic just completed shoot around, and a question very similar was asked of the two separately. Van Gundy was asked if he knew if Howard wanted him fired, and Van Gundy said yes.

Howard comes out later and denies that he wanted SVG fired.

Don’t believe me? Here’s the tweets from @howardbecknyt as it happened.

And the video…

I don’t know what to make of Howard’s behavior in this process. On one hand he seems to be acting like the ultimate diva ball player. Going back to the indecisiveness and then finally making a decision that we all know is just a stall tactic until next year.
Or, has he pulled the ultimate pimp move? We thought Bosh, Wade, and James teaming up was the “I’ll show you” moment to ownership in sports. Now with Howard basically holding Orlando by the nuts for the next year, he has the ultimate say so in what goes on within the organization or so it seems.
This is just getting more interesting. Stay tuned…

Could Dwight Howard be player/coach/gm?

Things are escalating to a soap opera type level in Orlando. The trade deadline is two days away and reports, rumors and sources are working overtime to be the first to scoop what’s going to happen with Dwight and the Magic.

This latest story via espn.com is something out of the 80’s Dynasty or Dallas tv series.

One source close to the situation told ESPN The Magazine’s Ric Bucher that the Magic have promised Howard that they will add a quality player before Thursday’s deadline and that Howard can decide the fate of both GM Otis Smith and coach Stan Van Gundy at the end of the season if he signs an extension

If this were to happen, you would have to but Dwight on top of the “Big Balls Mountain”. Move over Lebron, Melo and Chris Paul. This would be the ultimate power move. A player who could decide if his coach and GM stay put? By the way all of this has the okay of the Magic’s 86 year old owner Richard DeVos, who regards Dwight as a son.

Stay tuned. In the meantime, check out Dwight eating cookies off his face.
