NFL Halfway Point
We’re about halfway through the NFL season. So many teams are in the playoff chase. The Philadelphia Eagles have the best record in the league at (8-1). I also believe they are the best team in the league as well. Eagles QB Carson Wentz is in contention for MVP honors. He’s third in the league with 2,063 passing yards.
He also has a 101.6 passer rating. Philly is 5th in the league in total rushing yards, and 1st in defensive rushing yards allowed. This indicates the Eagles are an all-around team. The Kansas City Chiefs were the hottest team in the league as they started (5-0). The Chiefs actually defeated the Eagles 27-20 in week 2. Their first loss came against the Steelers 19-13 in week 6. Chiefs QB Alex Smith leads the league with a 115.4 passer rating.
Tom Brady certainly is not aging at 40-years old as he’s drinking his fountain of youth. His Patriots are (6-2) and he leads the league in total passing yards. Some of the biggest surprises so far this season, was the emergence of Deshaun Watson. Watson was the 12th overall pick in the 2017 draft. He took over the reigns in Week 1 as former starting QB Tom Savage was playing poorly. Watson led the Texans to a (3-3) start as a starter and he was the first QB in history with 400+ pass yards, 4 pass TD’s and 55+ rushing yards in week 8 against Seattle as he and Russell Wilson dueled it out 38-41. But Watson lost. Watson is easily in the Rookie of the Year conversation as well as NFL MVP. Watson also donated his first game check to three women who were affected by Hurricane Harvey. This shows how modest and unpretentious Watson is. But tragedy struck on November 2nd in a practice, Watson tore his ACL in his right knee. He’s going to miss the entire season.
Another surprise so far this season comes in the city of Angels. As QB Jared Goff and RB Todd Gurley have their LA Rams in a (5-2) start. They’re receiving no attention and publicity from the media. Despite playing in a large city.Let’s see if the Rams could keep it going as they are currently in the NFC playoff picture. Buffalo (5-3) and Jacksonville (4-3) are two surprises so far this season as well. The Bills have just acquired WR Kelvin Benjamin from Carolina to aid QB Tyrod Taylor offensive attack. The Jaguars are a smashmouth team as they lead the league passing yards allowed. Their young secondary which is amazing and it consist of Jaelen Ramsey, Tashaun Gipson, Barry Church and others, they are a lethal group together and cause havoc.
My awards for the NFL’s midseason are: MVP goes to Chiefs QB Alex Smith (2,181 pass yards, 16TD 0 INT), Offensive Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year, Texans QB Deshaun Watson (1,699 pass yards, 19TD 8 INT). Defensive Player of the Year Chiefs OLB Justin Houston (35 tackles, 7.5 sacks 1 fumble recovery). Coach of the Year Eagles, Doug Pederson (7-1 record).
My prediction for the teams that will date each other in Minneapolis for Super Bowl 52 will be the Eagles and Patriots. The Patriots defense has been mediocre. But Tom Brady has found many ways to win games. The Eagles are playing like the best team in football. My prediction for the game will be Eagles 31 Patriots 24.
