Dear Savannah State University Football Players,
How y’all feeling today? I’m sure some of you still hurt or have some lingering pains as if you just finished playing the Hurricanes. I respect you guys for going out and getting beat the way you did. And the punishment you took. Good Lord I was on the sidelines and I could hear the hits you guys were taking. I’m just glad it wasn’t me out there. I cringe at the hits y’all took because a lot of your players were indeed my size and it just as easily could have been me out there getting pummeled.
I won’t lie when you guys were out warming up prior to the game I thought you were one of those pee wee teams that play during half time or something. As soon as I saw that you were actually players from Savannah State I quickly began looking around for a priest to administer the last rites as you guys were about to get killed. I know Miami is not an elite program, yet, but those boys were a lot bigger, stronger and faster than you and we all knew what was coming next. Hell; Vegas hung a 60 point spread on you and even the spread couldn’t help you. Truth be told you were rocked like a hurricane, repeatedly.
I know Savannah State needed the money from the game, all 350k of it, to help pay for things at the school, but how do you guys feel about it? Don’t you feel like y’all were just thrown to the lions while the school had their hand out for the game check and basically said, “They’ll be ok,”? Was having your body sacrificed like that worth the money? How about having your morale, pride and dignity taken away from you, was that worth the check?
I guess you can take solace in the fact that there were many other small schools being used as whipping boys that day as well. And yes some schools got beaten just as bad as you. I really wish that wasn’t the case because, no offense, you guys aren’t in the same league as Miami or Ohio State etc. You’re a small school and in order to pay for programs and what not you have to be offered up as sacrificial lambs for a paycheck. By the way did you know FAMU got 900k to get beat by Ohio State?
I’m happy you guys are done playing no conference games and now can focus on beating teams in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. I wanted to write this letter to check in our you because of the beating and to say I respect that you guys played like warriors. It took a lot for you to go out there and sacrifice everything on the field that day. At least you had more people come to watch you guys play than the Marlins did. Always look for the silver linings! Hopefully you were able to go to KOD afterwards or maybe Tootsie’s to help ease the pain. I left some photos for you guys down below. You know a memento from the game to help you remember your time in sunny South Florida, but I think the bruises and welts are probably a better and more realistic reminder than the photos can ever be. Hope the 350k was worth it all!
