Miami Heat players (and ladies) show off “The Ring”

When reports ask Dwyane Wade where is his ring from 2006, he says “it’s in a safe somewhere”. When followed up with the question will you wear this ring, the answer is almost always no.

The same was said by Lebron James. But I think when they were asked that question, the guys should have added “after tonight I won’t be wearing it anymore”.

Check out some pictures of the fellas and ladies flaunting the jewelry out and about.

Ten Things That Stood out at the Heat Season Opener

The rings have been distributed. The banner has risen. After all of the pomp and circumstance of the championship celebration, the Miami Heat players began the journey to defend their title.

They did it in typical playoff type atmosphere fashion, beating the Boston Celtics 120-107 in front of a sell out crowd at the American Airlines Arena. The Heat were up at by 19 at one point, but the Celtics fired back and came within 4 points near the end of the 4th quarter.

No Lebron James? No problem for Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade who stepped up their play in the absence of the reigning league MVP who suffered from cramps in both legs.

What stood out mostly on this night? Was it Lebron getting his first ring? Dwyane and Udonis getting their second? Ray Allen facing his former team whom he won a championship with 5 years ago? Kevin Garnett hating? I’ve created a David Letterman-esque top 10 of things that stood out to me.

#10. Heat Win- nothing to see here. Not that it was expected (yes it was), but it’s not always easy when you’re playing your Eastern conference foe. Plus this group of Heat players didn’t want to go out like the Mavericks did last year on their ring night, or like the 2006 Heat team did.

#9. Celtics fight back to within 4 points- Not surprising. The C’s will be ok this season. They are still trying to figure things out as any team would be with a bunch of new parts.

#8. Lebron’s Leg Cramps- It wasn’t exactly like game 4 of the Finals last year, but Lebron was obviously in discomfort. He left the game once only to come back and score 6 points, but then started to cramp up again in middle of the 4th quarter and this time left for good.

#7. Chris Bosh at center- 19 and 10. And yes he outplayed Kevin Garnett on this night.

#6. Star Power at the AAA- Reggie Bush, Usain Bolt, Jimmy Buffet and Flo Rida. Only at an NBA game do you get a variety of star power.

#5. Rajon Rondo “punk move”- In the waning moments of the 4th quarter, Rondo’s clothesline on Wade was met with a smile and a shake of the head from the former finals MVP. Wade said it was a “punk move, but we move forward”. I agree. Let’s move to number 4.

#4. Ray Allen checking in for the first time- As soon as he got up and reported to the scorers table, the crowd went wild. Chants of “We Got Ray” rang through out the arena when he was at the free throw line.

#3. Ray Allen acknowledging the Boston staff/KG’s cold shoulder- Classy move by a classy guy. The staff reciprocated his greeting, but Kevin Garnett barely…check that…didn’t look up when Ray gave him a tap on the shoulder. KG is getting a lot flack for not responding, but I would’ve done the same thing.

#2. Lebron’s smile while holding his ring- priceless.

#1. Ring Ceremony/Banner raising- enough said.

Miami Dolphins Rookie Olivier Vernon voted Special Teams POY

Dolphin fans who didn’t know Olivier Vernon even though he has played his entire football career in Dade County will and should know him now.

The 3rd round draft pick started out slow this year but has slowly been making an impact on 3rd downs and as evident by this award, on special teams.

MIAMI – Miami Dolphins defensive end Olivier Vernon was named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week for games of October 25-29, it was announced today by the National Football League.

A rookie third-round selection from the University of Miami, Vernon scored his first career touchdown when he recovered a Jimmy Wilson blocked punt in the end zone in the first quarter. It was the first Miami touchdown scored off a blocked punt since Lex Hilliard recovered a punt that was blocked by Chris Clemons against the Buffalo Bills on November 20, 2011, and just the sixth in team history. Vernon then went on to register the first field goal block of his career when he blocked Jets kicker Nick Folk 35-yard attempt at the end of the second. The blocked field goal was the Dolphins first since September 26, 2010 when Yeremiah Bell blocked a 61-yard attempt by Folk.

Do NBA athletes dress up for Halloween?

Of course they do.

Here’s the evidence. Stephen Jackson and Tim Duncan as “The Punisher” and “The Joker”.

Even in a costume, Tim Duncan can’t add a personality.

Miami Carol City Chiefs New Uniforms Donated by Flo Rida

Maybe I’m not the one to write about these uniforms because I’m an alumnus of Miami Carol City , but I can’t wait to see the football team in the new uniforms come next fall.

The new uniforms apparently were inspired by another South Florida high school’s uniforms. The same designer took his pen to pad and created these. Rapper Flo Rida, who is also an alumnus of MCC, put his pen to his check book, and purchased the uni’s for the team.

This gift couldn’t have come at a better time. The Chiefs until this year had been struggling a bit. Calls for head coach Harold Barnwell’s head were loud and clear. But after having an experienced team in the midst, the Chiefs have came out the gate winning 6 straight games and have a record of 6-1 currently.

Good stuff. I’m proud to be a Chief!

Canes Coach Al Golden mistakenly text the wrong Morris

At least we know he was checking in on his starting quarterback and not drunk texting the ole ball coach.

Late Saturday night/early Sunday morning, Al Golden wanted to check in on his quarterback Stephen Morris, who had suffered a very bad ankle sprain in the waning minutes of the Hurricanes loss to UNC on Saturday. Morris had to be assisted off the field and backup Ryan Williams went in and couldn’t help the Canes get the victory.

With a big game against FSU coming up, Coach Golden wanted to check in on his guy Stephen Morris, but mistakenly texted UM baseball coach Jim Morris.

The elder Morris says

“I was thinking, ‘Now, why is he texting me at 5:30 in the morning? There’s nothing wrong.’

“So, I texted him back, ‘I’m fine. But out of curiosity, why are you asking?’

So he texted me back, ‘Sorry, [I] meant to text Stephen Morris, not Jim Morris.’

“I’m not playing quarterback,” Morris assured reporters, who had just finished their news conference with Golden and selected players.

Derrick Rose Adidas 3 Chicago Fire Sneaker

Adidas continues to roll out there kicks in the name of Derrick Rose. These shoes supposedly are a “shootout” to the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.

Back in October of that year, there was a uncontrollable blaze that resulted in 300 deaths and the destruction of several landmark structures, and it left roughly a third of the city’s population homeless.

Will D Rose rock these on the court?
